About Me

Hello!

Let me begin by telling you a bit about myself. My name is Francine and I am a small business owner living in Madera, CA. I own Anthem Books. I sell new, used and antiquarian books online.

I am an avid reader. I enjoy reading almost all genres of literature and you can expect to find a variety of book reviews, as well as reviews of magazines and anything else that catches my fancy.

I am also a writer and have been published in some journals, newspapers, etc. I will keep you all updated on what is happening in my life as far as reading/writing is concerned.

My goal with this book review is to highlight literature in and around the valley and also to just read as much great works of literature as possible.

Lastly, this is my book review blog and all views expressed are mine and mine alone. I am unconventional and my book reviews will be no different. I titled the blog Anthem Book Review, because Anthem by Ayn Rand is one of my favorite books and a philosophy I live by. I will it!

If you would like me to review a book or have any book suggestions email me at the below email address and let's discuss our love of words! Thank again!

Happy Reading!

~Francine

  2. Hi Francine,
Would you be interested in reviewing my linked short-story collection 'Treading the Uneven Road'? It will be released at the end of March by Fomite Press. It is approx. 50000 words.

The stories in this collection are set in a small village in the Northwest of Ireland in the early 1980’s and 90’s. A by-pass around the village has rid them of their once busy traffic. The residents feel forgotten by the world. The need to reach out and be heard is explored in every story, from the young woman who starts to have phone conversations with her husband’s gay lover, to the dyslexic man who confronts his cruel teacher years later.
The collection is not only about the characters need for salvation but it is about a society that is unraveling. In Amends, we hear about the Bishop who has fathered a child. A priest is beckoned by a dying man to be mocked. The world inside and outside the village is changing. In every story the characters need to make a choice on how they might carry on.

The blurb from Pamela Painter, author of Getting To Know The Weather, and The Long and Short of it--
Set in Ireland, the wonderful stories in TREADING THE UNEVEN ROAD are connected with bands of steel and heart. Their unforgettable characters weave in and out of each other’s lives, acting on impulses that are sometimes misguided, occasionally dangerous but often beautiful. A great read.

My novel Debris was released last April. I am from Sligo, Ireland but presently reside in Massachusetts. May I send you a copy of the book? I can send kindle version or PDF and spec sheet.
I will look forward to hearing from you, best wishes Lorna

  3. Hello Francine,

My name is John-Patrick (J.P.) Bayle. I would love to have you review my book. The book is called, The Order (304 pages, historical fiction). I can send a hardcopy of the book and a DVD with the book trailer if you are interested. I have included the copy from the back cover below.

    The Order -
An ancient origin. A secret society. A long anticipated birth has come to pass. The news spreads in a hushed wave throughout the world. It has begun. Armies move while nations sleep, and one of human history’s greatest movements teeters on the edge of collapse.

The Order is a gripping tale of deception, secrecy, cruelty, and a man whose faith stands firm in the face of it all.

Set in 16th century Europe, the story centers around a young man (Jan Vander Leuk) who believes he has had his life’s course clearly set as he enters an abbey, only to find that, even within the shelter of a monastic community, he is not safe from evil. He quickly becomes aware that the spiritual battlegrounds of the outside world have spilled over into the Church, and have twisted even the holiest of brotherhoods. Upon having his idyllic dreams shattered, the bright, but naïve, young novice is sent on a journey that takes him from fugitive to prisoner and back again. Eventually Jan’s journeys lead him into the Holy Roman Empire, to the city of Wittenberg, where he encounters a man who will reveal to him his true connection to a movement that has spanned centuries, and has secretly penetrated every level of the governments and religious hierarchies throughout all Christendom.

Sue Harrison, best-selling author of the Ivory-Carver trilogy and the Storyteller trilogy had this to say about my book:
"A great setting, very meticulous research, characters that come alive! I found the battle scene particularly well-written, and I didn't figure out the mystery behind the story until the end of the book. THE ORDER is a novel that deals with the issues that tore apart the civilized world centuries ago and yet are still pertinent today."

I'm not sure if you do book reviews for Poetry but I thought I'd reach out and ask. I recently self published my first Poetry book and I wanted to ask if you would be interested in reviewing it? I would be so appreciative of any help in getting my book started. I wrote this book to heal myself from trauma experienced throughout my life and to be a healing light for others. I hope to gather some momentum :) Here are the details below... I can be reached at kelley.c.phelan@gmail.com

    1. This true story is a memoir of growing up in a small town of Colorado. While many of my relatives gifted me animals, one beloved uncle gifted me a bible before he died of cancer. This one gift of finding Jesus, continues to give. This book is beautifully written and will lead others to the cross. It has a Little House on the Prairie taste and Walton feel that is told in a modern-day fashion. In today's society, it is important to be an ambassador for Christ, and lead others to the cross. Please consider a review for this book. I am willing to do book promotions, be a guest on a podcast, and inspirational speaking.
